IN FOCUS!
Sustainability is crucial for AB Blåkläder, both in the daily operations in Svenljunga, but also in the production that takes place in other parts of the world. It’s our responsibility as a company to create a solid and safe working environment for the employees and to reduce the environmental impact of the manufacturing of materials and components. But we also see the factories where our garments are produced as an important part of our long-term sustainability work .
LEED
As proof that our work is progressing, we are proud to announce that the factory in Thambuttegama, Sri Lanka, where many of Blåkläders garments are manufactured, has achieved and been certified LEED Gold level. It's the second highest certification class for LEED Green Buildings.
In the construction and formation of a building, regardless of type or purpose, the nearby surroundings, as well as the general environment, will be affected in the short and long term. Several parameters need to be considered, and the initial choice of building materials and energy sources will have a significant impact on how sustainable a property will become when it’s finished.
Comprehensive guidelines
LEED Green Building Certification System stands for Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, and is a certification program developed by U.S. Green Building Council. LEED Green Building Certification System stands for leadership in energy and environmental design, and is a certification program developed by U.S. Green Building Council. The certification outlines environmentally sustainable structures, regardless of the type of building it concerns.
It covers the entire process; from design to construction, including energy efficiency, water consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.
It also takes into account the current environment, sensitive nature, water shortages and available energy sources.
LEED is integrated into the entire construction process and the structure is validated based on seven rating categories;
● Sustainable Sites (SS)
● Water Efficiency (WE)
● Energy and Atmosphere (EA)
● Materials and Resources (MR)
● Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)
● Innovative Design (ID)
● Regional Priority (RP)
The five first categories compose an environmental-oriented requirement specification and the sixth requirement, Innovative Design, relates to complementary design and construction regarding durability. The last criteria parameter, Regional Priority, refers to a rating based on geographical location.
The rating categories are then weighted according to a credit system (max 100 basis points) and the total amount determines which LEED certification level is achieved;
● Certified (40–49 points)
● Silver (50–59 points)
● Gold (60–79 points)
● Platinum (80+ points)
A common misunderstanding is that the construction of buildings in accordance with LEED automatically involves additional costs. On the contrary, it leads to lower operating costs for the finished building. We are very pleased to be able to produce work clothes in an environmentally sustainable factory. it's something that benefits everyone, presently as well as in a longer perspective.
